WHY BEETLES SHINE
Beetles are known for their shiny, colorful shells. Thereâs even a whole family called jewel beetles because they look like sparkly gemstones. Scientists have been studying them to see if bright colors help beetles find each other. One thing theyâve discovered is that the surface of a jewel beetleâs shell is made from a liquid crystalâlike substance arranged in tiny pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons. This causes iridescence, in which colors shift depending on what angle youâre looking at them from. Other beetles have layered shells, or closely packed, tiny bowl-shaped dents that reflect light. Scientists arenât sure yet what these kinds of shiny shells are used for, but think they might confuse predators. Either way, theyâre pretty!
